Self Control

How self control aids in self development

In the present scenario, most of us are guided by our material and emotional desires and tend to forget the consequences that it may lead to, in future. The values and beliefs that we develop in our tender age or at the time of our confusing teenage usually determine our course of actions later in life. These principles should therefore be carefully chosen. So it all depends on us how we want our future to be? Whether we want to change and control the circumstances for our good, or do, we want the circumstances to have an upper hand and control us.

Thus, the foremost thing to be kept in mind for a better future is to change one’s priorities in life, or to put it in simple words, to negate the animal desires and develop a control over our own self. A conscious and rational self is one of the greatest assets a man can posses. It helps us to organize our life in a better manner and keeps a check on our irrational behavior. It improves our understanding of the circumstances of life and makes us a mature human being. This strengthens our character and contributes to our perseverance. All these things together make a successful and a good human being thereby leading to his self-development. Self-control enables us to determine and focus on our goals in life. It aids in striking the correct balance in life, both on the professional and personal front. With self-control directing our actions, we end up becoming adults that are more responsible.

A person not employing self-control may have to suffer a lot in his life. He may not be able to handle well the challenges of life, be depressed by failures, or end up messing his life. This is to say that he may prove himself to be a useless person who has been let down by the destiny or circumstances of life. Such a person will always be confused about his goals and will only face disappointment. Moreover, reacting to situations in an extreme manner, i.e. too happy or too sad, will make him either a dejected person or a careless individual which may hamper his overall progress. Because of this, he can also be a victim to lower self-respect, as he himself will not believe in his own worth. Therefore, it is essential for each one of us to develop self-control and make it an important part of our life. Therefore, the foremost thing in this direction is to have a strong will power. This is because, whenever we make efforts to restrain ourselves from doing something that we intensely desire, we usually end up giving up the task to control ourselves within a few days. This is where the role of a strong will power in an effectual self-control comes. A strong will power helps in taking a decision seriously and curbs our animal desires. It aids us in planning things and takes positive steps towards our aim in life. It confers upon us the capacity to fight the negative qualities that lie within ourselves and finally overcome them.

Another important factor is self-discipline. It refers to the giving up of the present materialist desires for an urge to achieve a higher goal in life. This can mean a discipline in all phases of life. It may be spiritual, physical, emotional or mental discipline. It makes us emphasize our energy on our objectives and be a successful person in times to come. This makes one a stronger person from within and adds on to his self-development. Consequently, it can be said that a blend of strong will power and self-control leads the way to the development of self-control and further to an improved individual self.
